Mellow Mushroom

Published on October 18, 2012 by in Reviews

309 King Pizza, large draft beer selection $$ How to save $$: Go Monday from 4pm-close for a $5 small 1-topping pizza Mellow Mushroom has been keeping Joe College full since the ’70s in a college town near you. Currently, it’s sporting 120+ franchised locations (3 in the Charleston area) and, as of recently, has made a big push outside of its comfortable college-town-only business mode and expanded into larger urban areas in the Southeast. It has, for the most part, brilliantly branded the “stereotypical pizza joint.” And the pizza is freakin good. When you enter, you’ll find psychedelic décor,

Virginia’s on King

Published on October 4, 2012 by in Reviews

412 King Southern/Soul: Breakfast, Weekday Lunch, Weekend Brunch, Dinner (except Sundays) $$$ How to save $: Use a Restaurant.com Gift Card. We did the $25 off $50 for some good savings. Virginia’s On King, which shares an owner with Coast and Rue de Jean, is the final restaurant of the trifecta that we needed to review. With this task complete, we can say that the guys behind these restaurants are doing something right as all are delicious (but, if forced to rank, Rue de Jean will take the cake 10 times out of 10).   The only one of the

Tasty Thai and Sushi

350 King Thai: Lunch, Dinner $$ How to Save $: It’s on Restaurant.com, so be sure to print off a coupon before dining Looking for some ethnic food on a budget with a good atmosphere? Look no further than Tasty Thai & Sushi, the sister restaurant to Taste of Thai in West Ashley. Be sure to sit in the front of the restaurant, so you can people-watch on King Street. If that’s what you’re after, I’d suggest going on a Thursday through Saturday night, when things are a bit more “interesting.” Tasty Thai and Sushi looks pretty cool from the

Fast and French

98 Broad French $$-Mid How to save $: Specials are offered each night (Thursdays are Fondue Night) Craving some French food but not craving the prices of La Fourchette or even 39 Rue de Jean? Look no further than Broad St. (right off of King). This hole-in-the-wall restaurant isn’t too hard to miss, what with all the blue and red French flag decoration on the sidewalk. Commonly known as Fast and French, don’t walk past it just because it’s real name is Gaulart and Maliclet. Tricky. The best time to go is on Thursday night because that’s fondue night –

King Street Grille

Published on August 24, 2012 by in Reviews

304 King Pub/Bar, American $$ King Street Grille touts itself as an “upscale sports bar,” which appears to be a very recent rebranding. They’ve attempted to “class up” the menu a lot: they’ve added a crown beside each and every one of the “The King’s Recommendations,” removed the beer list altogether (apparently Royalty drinks a red or white wine from their extensive menu that did make the cut). I guess that’s what separates the grills from the Grilles. From a quick glance at their website, it would seem that this is a perfect place to “bro out,” as evidenced from their MMA After

Osteria la Bottiglia

Published on August 5, 2012 by in Reviews

420 King $$$ – Dinner every night Italian Italian food is my very favorite genre of food, so I’ve been wanting to try Osteria la Bottiglia for the past few months. We’ve recently walked by and heard live music, so we made sure to call ahead to see when the band is there. On Wednesday nights beginning at 7:30, they have live music playing in the front of the restaurant. When we arrived, we weren’t sure which of the two doors to enter from King Street, but decided on the open one– even though we had to walk straight through the

Closed for Business

Published on July 29, 2012 by in Reviews

Cool name, right? OK, we get it: You’re actually rather open for business and this would explain the packed front bar area and frequent occurrence of a line to get in nearly every weekend night. I had patronized the beer-centric bar a handful of times and it had never disappointed. In my mind, this was always a great spot to go grab a beer late-night, often a time when dinner is the last thing on my mind (as all of my calories at that point in the night will be liquid). But alas, we have a blog which forces us

CO

Co Restaurant King Street Charleston, Vietnamese Charleston, Co Vietnamese Charleston, Co-Restaurant, Co-Restaurant.com,  Cheap Vietnamese, Charleston Banh Mi and Noodles 340 King Asian & Vietnamese Lunch, Dinner and Late-night bar menu until 1am Fri & Sat $$ CO has just popped up in the past few weeks and the packed bar area on every walk-by had us intrigued. Interestingly, it opened up almost right across the street from Mama Kim’s new and improved location but, despite both serving Asian fare, they shouldn’t overlap as CO is a much classier experience. The very sleekly decorated, plate-glass window looks straight through to the (rather small)

Joe Pasta

Published on May 4, 2012 by in Reviews

428 King Italian (Lunch, Dinner) $$ How to Save Money: Thursday is $2 house liquors all night. Happy Hour is $2 domestic, $3 imports. BOGO apps from 4-8 p.m. You can often find gift certificates on Restaurant.com and coupons in many of the weekly advertising circulars around Charleston. If you’re looking for a way to bypass the microwave when cooking frozen entrees from the grocery store, look no further than Joe Pasta. This “Italian” restaurant reminds me more of Harris Teeter than Italy– the only thing that could make it worse is if they charged us in Euros. Entrees are

Leaf

Published on April 29, 2012 by in Reviews

15 Beaufain American $$ Leaf has been one of the new buzz restaurants on the peninsula and we’ve been working up an appetite to try it. Situated in the old Vickery’s location, when you walk into the main entrance, you’ll find the large open bar area and they’ve got tons of outdoor seating which is one of the best assets of the restaurant. It was no secret that Vickery’s downtown was a notorious hangout for men of an alternative lifestyle and, after our dining experience, I can say that there must be something about that building, because our gaydars were going
