Closed for Business

Published on July 29, 2012 by in Reviews

Cool name, right? OK, we get it: You’re actually rather open for business and this would explain the packed front bar area and frequent occurrence of a line to get in nearly every weekend night. I had patronized the beer-centric bar a handful of times and it had never disappointed. In my mind, this was always a great spot to go grab a beer late-night, often a time when dinner is the last thing on my mind (as all of my calories at that point in the night will be liquid). But alas, we have a blog which forces us

CO

Co Restaurant King Street Charleston, Vietnamese Charleston, Co Vietnamese Charleston, Co-Restaurant, Co-Restaurant.com,  Cheap Vietnamese, Charleston Banh Mi and Noodles 340 King Asian & Vietnamese Lunch, Dinner and Late-night bar menu until 1am Fri & Sat $$ CO has just popped up in the past few weeks and the packed bar area on every walk-by had us intrigued. Interestingly, it opened up almost right across the street from Mama Kim’s new and improved location but, despite both serving Asian fare, they shouldn’t overlap as CO is a much classier experience. The very sleekly decorated, plate-glass window looks straight through to the (rather small)

Pace’s Pizza Balls

Published on June 1, 2012 by in Reviews

Pace’s Pizza Balls 363 King Lunch, Dinner, Late Night (open Mon.-Thurs. til 12 a.m. and Fri.-Sat. til 2 a.m.) $ How to save $: They regularly advertise deals on a chalk board visible from King St. I tried the Pizza Ball + 16oz PBR special for $6.95. Nothing has done well in the 363 King Street location that is now home to the new order-at-the-counter “quick food” restaurant: Pace’s Pizza Balls. Restaurants seem to come and go, never lasting more than a year. From the street, the inside space looks tiny, with just enough room for a few tables, but

Cocktail Club

Published on May 24, 2012 by in Reviews

The Cocktail Club Review Charleston South Carolina King Street Good Drinks Charleston 479 King American/Pub (Happy Hour, Bar) $ How to save some $: They have different Happy Hour specials every day of the week. Thursday was select cocktails for $6 and half-off food from 5 to 7 p.m. It’s pretty hard to stumble upon the Cocktail Club–you have to been looking for it, and, even then, you might overlook it. You enter through a small door just south of The Macintosh; in fact, I had passed it many times thinking it was another entrance to The Macintosh. You’ll have to climb

Barsa Tapas

Published on May 21, 2012 by in Reviews

Barsa Tapas Lounge & Bar Review Charleston South Carolina King Street Spanish, Tapas, Wine Bar Dinner, Late Night Friday & Sat $ As extensive and self-proclaimed “world travelers,” we were very interested in extending our wide variety of international culinary insight on the local Spanish-inspired tapas restaurant, Barsa. You’ll want to know up front that Barsa is so far on upper King that you’ll feel as if you could be shanked by a homemade bottle knife at any moment outside of the restaurant–you up in da hood now. Don’t be alarmed, though– we made it out unscathed and didn’t see

O-Ku

Published on May 18, 2012 by in Reviews

463 King Dinner $$$$ How to save $: Check it out from 5pm to 7pm Mon, Wed or Fri, more details below It is obviously no secret that O-Ku has great happy hour specials–on our visit Friday evening, the place nearly had a line out of the door. The restaurant, which is owned by the same group as Oak, The Macintosh, The Cocktail Club etc… is about to celebrate its 2 year anniversary on King Street, and there is no doubt that it has weathered the new-restaurant-hype stage and is slowing maturing into a Upper King staple. I would suggest calling ahead

82 Queen

Published on May 16, 2012 by in Reviews

82 Queen American and Seafood (Lunch, Dinner, Weekend Brunch) $$$ We wanted to go to a fun, fancy restaurant to celebrate. My only requirements: I wanted to sit outside. And go to a place neither of us had been before. I asked around for some opinions and Jeff did a little more thorough and unbiased research (looking at online reviews from strangers), and we finally decided on 82 Queen. Jeff was a little hesitant and told me (after we made reservations) that this place was known for being touristy. And we’re known for not liking touristy places. So, without exagerating

Joe Pasta

Published on May 4, 2012 by in Reviews

428 King Italian (Lunch, Dinner) $$ How to Save Money: Thursday is $2 house liquors all night. Happy Hour is $2 domestic, $3 imports. BOGO apps from 4-8 p.m. You can often find gift certificates on Restaurant.com and coupons in many of the weekly advertising circulars around Charleston. If you’re looking for a way to bypass the microwave when cooking frozen entrees from the grocery store, look no further than Joe Pasta. This “Italian” restaurant reminds me more of Harris Teeter than Italy– the only thing that could make it worse is if they charged us in Euros. Entrees are

Leaf

Published on April 29, 2012 by in Reviews

15 Beaufain American $$ Leaf has been one of the new buzz restaurants on the peninsula and we’ve been working up an appetite to try it. Situated in the old Vickery’s location, when you walk into the main entrance, you’ll find the large open bar area and they’ve got tons of outdoor seating which is one of the best assets of the restaurant. It was no secret that Vickery’s downtown was a notorious hangout for men of an alternative lifestyle and, after our dining experience, I can say that there must be something about that building, because our gaydars were going
